1. Download Instalar_necROmantic.zip with the button above.
2. Unzip it. Right-click the file → Extract all. Inside there is a single file: Instalar_necROmantic.exe.
3. Run that file. Windows will show two warnings in a row; both are normal, and further down we explain what to click on each one.
4. Follow the wizard. By default it installs to C:\Juegos\necROmantic. Do not install into C:\Program Files, the Desktop, Downloads, or any folder synced with OneDrive or Google Drive.
5. When it finishes you will have a necROmantic icon on your desktop.
6. Open that icon. The updater will download the full game: around 4.6 GB, so the first time takes a while. You can pause the download and continue later; it resumes exactly where you left it, even if you close the program.
7. Create your account at necromantic.online, log in and join the server.

Windows distrusts any program without a commercial digital signature, which costs several hundred euros a year. It happens to every private server. If you downloaded the file from this site, it is ours.

1. While downloading: the browser blocks the file

Chrome and Edge: in the downloads bar, click the three dots next to the file and choose Keep. If another screen appears, click Show more and then Keep anyway.
Firefox: click Continue download, or the warning icon next to the file name, and confirm.

2. When running it: «Windows protected your PC»

That is SmartScreen. The first screen shows no button to continue: you have to click More info, and then Run anyway appears.

The screenshots above are from a Spanish Windows, so the buttons read Más información and Ejecutar de todas formas. They sit in exactly the same place on an English one.

It saying Unknown publisher means precisely that: we have not paid for the signature. It says nothing about what is inside the file.

3. While installing: the blue permissions prompt

Windows will ask «Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?». Click Yes. The installer needs administrator rights to create the game folder, the shortcut and the uninstall entry. If you click No, the installation cancels without doing anything.

You do not need to configure anything to play: the client comes ready. If you want to change the resolution or the sound, open the updater and click Settings. That opens opensetup.exe, the client's settings screen.

Resolution

Pick 1920x1080 or lower. Above that, the game interface looks tiny and some windows fall off the screen; the game is from 2002 and its interface does not scale.

Full screen

Tick Play in Full Screen. On 2K and 4K monitors the image stretches correctly to the whole screen while keeping its aspect ratio: that is already solved in the client, you do not have to touch anything.

Graphics API

Only DirectX 7 shows up, and that is correct. The game engine has no DirectX 9 mode; the option was deliberately removed so that nobody picks it and has the game close without any error message.

Sound

Use 2D Sound is the most compatible. Use 3D Sound gives positional audio but fails on some cards; if the game closes on startup, go back to 2D.

Texture quality and trilinear filtering

Leave them as they come. Raising the filtering improves nothing in a sprite game: it just blurs them.

When you are done

Save with OK and press PLAY in the updater. There is no need to close it: the updater stays open while you configure.

Ragnarok is a 2002 game and needs pieces that Windows no longer ships by default. First of all, read what the updater tells you: if the game closes right after opening, it explains it on screen and tells you what is missing. If it still will not start, or you get a black screen:

1. Go into the game folder (C:\Juegos\necROmantic by default).
2. Open the redistributable subfolder.
3. Run vcredist_aio.exe and install every Visual C++ package it offers. If Windows asks to restart, restart before carrying on.
4. Run dxwebsetup.exe. It needs an internet connection to fetch the DirectX components.
5. Open the updater again and press PLAY.

If the problem persists, the updater has a Copy diagnostics button: paste that text into Discord and we will be able to tell you what is going on. There is also a View log button that opens the incident file in Notepad.
